Recording with click highlights
A click highlight is a ring or ripple your recording tool draws on screen each time you click. When a recording shows Camtasia's click rings, Lighter Journeys reads most clicks from them: on six of our test recordings (4K screens, Windows) it found 155 of 171 clicks, missing about 1 in 11, and added 2 that did not happen. Without highlights, Lighter Journeys estimates clicks from where the pointer paused: on 38 recordings one person on our team made on Windows, on a 4K screen and a 1440 x 1080 screen, that found about half the clicks (about 4 in 10 on the 1440 x 1080 screen), and about 1 in 3 of the clicks it reported did not happen.
Clicks are in Beta. Click detection is still being improved and does not count toward the Effort Score.
Tools Lighter Journeys reads highlights from
Camtasia (Windows and macOS)
Record with Camtasia Recorder, then in Camtasia open Cursor Effects and drag a left click effect such as Rings onto the recording before you export it.
Other tools that draw a colored ring on each click may work too, but only the tools listed here have been checked on real recordings. We add a tool to this list once it has been.
Being tested, and not supported yet
- PowerToys Mouse Highlighter (Windows), being tested. Lighter Journeys can read its click circles: on our one test recording it found 20 of 25 clicks. That recording was also used to build the reader, so this is not yet a fair test, and we do not recommend it until a second recording confirms it. On a 4K screen its circle is too small at the default size.
- macOS Show Mouse Clicks, not supported yet. The click circle the macOS Screenshot toolbar can show is not read yet. Recordings that show it are counted from where the pointer paused instead.
Getting the best count
- Turn the click highlight on before you start recording and keep it on until you stop. Click a few times in the first minute: Lighter Journeys checks the first 60 seconds to decide whether a recording has highlights.
- Use an effect that appears on each click. A spotlight that follows the pointer all the time does not help.
- Upload the exported video as usual. Nothing else changes.
Reports of these recordings say that clicks were read from the recording's click highlights. Other reports suggest turning them on next time.
