Lighter Journeys times the task in a narrated screen recording, transcribes what was said and marks the moments worth a closer look. It is run by Chris Harris. It is in an invitation-only preview, and rules below that say "during the preview" apply until the preview ends. This page explains, in plain words, what we collect, why, how long we keep it and what you can do about it. Questions or requests: chris@lighterjourneys.com.
Who we are
Lighter Journeys is run by Chris Harris ("we" and "us" on this page). For questions or requests about your data, write to chris@lighterjourneys.com.
Our role
For the account, billing, support and waitlist data we collect from you directly, we decide how it is used. Privacy laws call this being the "controller".
For recordings and everything Lighter Journeys derives from them, the organization whose workspace holds them decides how they are used, and we process them on its behalf. Privacy laws call this being its "processor" or "service provider". If you appear in a recording, contact the organization that recorded you. If you write to us instead, we will pass your request on to that organization. When an organization has a data processing agreement with us, that agreement governs its recordings.
What we store
- Your account: your name and email address. Clerk, our sign-in provider, holds your account, and we keep a copy of your name and email in our own database.
- The recordings you upload, and what Lighter Journeys derives from them: the transcript of any narration, timestamped measures, scores, thumbnails and reports.
- The projects, journeys, tasks, participants and notes you create, and the corrections and effort labels you add to reports, with who added them.
- Support requests you send us, and the ratings and comments you leave on reports.
- Service data: errors (with the page address and browser type), a numeric summary of each analysis (how long it took, the recording's length, how many of each measure it found and their average confidence, the mix of narration labels, and model versions), and the kind of each correction, the level of each effort label and the score of each rating you make. It never includes video, audio, transcript text, titles, file names, notes or rating comments.
- A record of the terms version you accepted and the consent confirmation you gave before uploading, with the time and your account. We keep these records for up to 7 years after you delete your account, with your account id only, as evidence of what was agreed.
Where it is stored and processed
Recordings and results are stored in Microsoft Azure, in the East US 2 region. Transcription and analysis run there too, on servers in our own Azure account, using open-source models and models we trained ourselves. Any reading of text on the screen (OCR) runs there as well. The companies that process data for us are listed on our subprocessors page.
Outside AI models analyze customer recordings in one feature only, listening sentiment, and only for workspaces where we have turned it on. It judges frustration and delight from how you sound, so it sends the narration audio of the analyzed recording, a short stretch at a time with the matching transcript lines and a few calm clips of the same speaker, through OpenRouter to Xiaomi's MiMo model and, on paid plans, Google's Gemini model. Our requests let OpenRouter run MiMo only at DeepInfra, and Gemini only at Google. It sends no video, and nothing from a recording uploaded before October 8, 2026. Every one of these requests asks OpenRouter to use only providers that do not collect the data and keep nothing after they answer (zero data retention), whatever the workspace's training setting.
Otherwise no outside AI model analyzes customer recordings or transcripts. The one exception is our AI support assistant (see "Who on our side can see it" below), which may view a recording only when you share it on a support request. The two other features that could send a transcript to an outside model service (OpenRouter) are blocked for every customer recording. Before any other outside model reads customer content, we will name it on this page. We never sell your data.
We store data in the United States and run our own processing there. The outside services named on this page and on our subprocessors page may process what we send them in other countries. If you use Lighter Journeys from outside the United States, your data is transferred to the United States. During the preview we serve customers in the United States. Organizations that need to send us personal data of people in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland should contact us first, so we can sign the European Commission's standard contractual clauses with them.
Why we use it, and our legal bases
- To provide the service you signed up for. Legal basis: our contract with you.
- To keep Lighter Journeys secure, fix it and improve it, including with the service data described above. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a safe, working service.
- To send waitlist invitations and occasional product news. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- To meet our legal obligations. Legal basis: the law that requires it.
- To train our detectors, only as the workspace's training setting allows. For recordings, this is part of the processing we do for the organization whose workspace holds them, under that organization's legal basis (see "Our role"). The training section below explains how.
For recordings, the organization that controls them relies on its own legal basis.
Training: how your data may improve Lighter Journeys
Each workspace has one of two training settings.
- Training allowed. The default, and the only setting a Free workspace can choose. We may use the workspace's data to train and improve our own detectors. Today the only outside model companies that receive customer recordings for analysis are the listening-sentiment providers named above, and those requests always ask for no data collection and zero retention. If another model company ever receives customer data for analysis, we name it on this page first, and this setting would then let that company train too. Anthropic also receives a recording you share on a support request, for our AI support assistant; this setting does not let it train (see below). It costs less.
- No training. It costs more. We do not train on the workspace's data, and we give no model company permission to train on it. Outside our own servers, its recordings go only to services that we ask to keep nothing after they return a result. The exception is a recording you share on a support request, which our AI support assistant may view (see below).
Today. Nothing has been used for training. Using customer data for training is switched off for everyone. When it starts, it will not use data added before October 8, 2026. The paid No training option is not in billing yet. Until it is, Founding Insider and Design Partner workspaces can choose No training in Settings, under Data use, as part of their plan.
Before anything changes. We will email workspace admins and show a notice in Lighter Journeys at least 30 days before we start using data for training, or change how we use it, and we will update this page and our terms first.
What training can use. Your recordings, their transcripts and analysis results, and the corrections and effort labels people add to reports, but never who made them or any note typed with them. Also the service data described above.
What it never uses. Your name or email address (unless they appear on screen in a recording or are spoken in it), who made a correction, notes you type, support conversations, rating comments or waitlist details.
Switching. Choosing No training covers the workspace's data from before and after the switch. Switching to Training allowed covers only data from that date on. Training cannot undo what a model already learned from data used earlier. If your plan ends, a No training choice stays until a workspace admin switches it. On a plan without No training, you can't switch back after choosing Training allowed. Our team can also set No training on any plan by agreement.
Training copies. Data copied for training is kept for at most 12 months. It is deleted sooner when its workspace switches to No training, or when the recording or the workspace is deleted.
Whatever the setting, we collect service data to run and fix Lighter Journeys.
Who can see it
- You, and the members of the workspace you uploaded to.
- Anyone you give a share link to, while the link is valid. You can revoke a link at any time, and every link expires.
- Our team, to run, fix and improve the service, as described below.
Who on our side can see it
Our support staff, including an AI assistant that works for us (Claude, made by Anthropic), see account and workspace details, usage, the titles and analysis status of your recordings, errors, your support requests (with our internal notes on them), the ratings and comments you leave, and waitlist details.
They view a recording only when you share it on a support request. If you edited the recording, they see the whole original upload, including the parts you trimmed out. When we view it, the request shows "Our team viewed your recording." Access ends when you withdraw it or the request closes, but a viewing link already opened keeps working for up to 15 minutes.
Outside a support request, our founder views a recording only to investigate a report of abuse or a security incident, no more than needed to confirm the facts, and notes each view in the record of the investigation. The support assistant never does.
What the AI assistant reads is sent to Anthropic to process. We have turned off the setting that lets Anthropic use it to train its models.
How long we keep videos
Apart from uploads with no screen recording (below), we keep the video file of each recording for 90 days after you upload it. If your workspace has a Founding Insider or Design Partner plan, we keep it until 90 days after the plan's term ends instead. Then we delete the video file, and the copies of its video and audio that we made to analyze it.
Everything else stays: reports, scores, findings, measures, the transcript, thumbnails, and your notes and corrections. The report still opens, without a video to play. A recording whose video was deleted can no longer be edited or analyzed again.
The library and the report show a notice 14 days before this rule deletes a video. This rule started on October 19, 2026, and it deletes no video less than 14 days after that date.
You can download the original video from its recording page until it is deleted.
If we find no screen recording in an upload we have not made a report from, we keep its video file for 7 days after we tell you, so support can check it and analyze it again if we got it wrong. Then we delete the video file and the copies we made to check it, without a further notice: the message about the upload says so. The recording stays in your library with the reason.
How long we keep service data
At our current settings:
- Errors: 7 to 14 days.
- Analysis summaries: 30 days.
- The kinds, levels and scores recorded from corrections, labels and ratings: 90 days.
Any of these can go sooner if the table reaches its size limit. The corrections, labels and ratings themselves stay with the recording until you delete it. Server logs are kept for 30 days. Database backups are kept for 7 days, so a deleted record can stay in a backup until that backup expires.
We may keep data longer when the law requires it, or while we investigate a security incident or a report of abuse, and only for that purpose.
Deleting recordings and accounts
Apart from video files, which follow the rule above, recordings and their results stay until you delete them. Deleting a recording removes the video, its analyses, reports and share links; stored files are removed straight away, with follow-up checks that catch anything left behind. It also removes the recording's quotes from saved findings, and findings that counted it say so until you update or delete them. You can delete a participant entry, with its cohorts and notes, in Settings, under Participants. Deleted or replaced files stay recoverable by us for 7 days in case of a mistake, then are gone for good. A small record that the recording existed (its identifiers and your usage count) is kept so usage limits stay accurate. You can delete your account from the account menu: that deletes your personal workspace and every recording in it. Recordings you uploaded to a team workspace belong to that team and stay until the team deletes them or the workspace itself is deleted, which deletes all of its recordings. For help, contact chris@lighterjourneys.com. If the preview ends, we will tell you before deleting anything. Workspace admins can download a copy of the workspace's data from Settings, under Export, at any time, including before deleting it.
Deleting your account clears your name and email address from our database. The records of account events that our sign-in provider sends us, which can include them, are cleared within 30 days. After that, only bare ids remain. Our database backups, kept for 7 days, still contain deleted records until they expire.
Editing a recording does not change your original upload. Sections you remove stop appearing in the recording and their analysis data is deleted, but they stay in the original upload until you delete the recording. If you split a recording into parts, the original upload is deleted when the last part is deleted.
Support requests and ratings
- When you contact us through Support, or escalate an analysis that failed, we keep your messages and our replies. A request about an analysis also records technical details about it, such as error codes, lengths and settings. It never copies the recording, its transcript or its title, but our team can see the recording's title, length and status.
- Our team views a recording for a request only if you allow it on that request, and you can withdraw that at any time. If you edited the recording, this includes the parts you trimmed out.
- If you rate a report, we keep the score and any comment you add.
- Deleting a recording deletes the comments on its ratings but keeps the scores. Support requests are a separate conversation, so they stay. Deleting a workspace, or your account (which deletes your personal workspace), deletes that workspace's support requests and ratings.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have the right to:
- see the personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it in a portable format;
- have it corrected or deleted;
- object to how we use it, or ask us to limit how we use it;
- withdraw a consent you gave, such as for product news.
Residents of some US states, such as California, also have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to delete or correct it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing, which we never do. In some states you can appeal if we refuse a request. We will not treat you differently for using any of these rights.
How. You can do most of this in Lighter Journeys: edit or delete your recordings, export a report as CSV or JSON from its page, and delete your account from the account menu. For anything else, write to chris@lighterjourneys.com. We answer within 30 days, and we may need to confirm your identity first. For a recording, we may refer you to the organization that controls it (see "Our role").
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
Cookies and browser storage
Sign-in uses cookies from Clerk, our sign-in provider, that are needed to keep you signed in. The app also keeps a few interface preferences in your browser's storage, such as the journey you last uploaded to and the notices you closed. We use no advertising or analytics cookies and do not track you across other sites, so we show no cookie banner.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track you across sites, and we do not sell or share personal information, so these browser signals change nothing here. We treat them as a request not to do those things, which we already honor for everyone.
California notice at collection
If you live in California, this is what we collect about you and why.
- What we collect. Identifiers, such as your name and email address. Account and support records. Audio and visual information in the recordings you upload. Internet activity, limited to the service data described above. Inferences, limited to the results Lighter Journeys derives from recordings. For example, listening sentiment, where we have turned it on, judges from the narration audio and transcript whether the speaker sounds frustrated during part of a task, and on paid plans whether they sound pleased.
- Why. For the purposes listed under "Why we use it, and our legal bases".
- Selling and sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, as California law defines those words.
- Sensitive personal information. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you, and we do not use voice or any other biometric information to identify anyone.
- How long we keep it. As described above under "What we store", "How long we keep videos", "How long we keep service data", "Deleting recordings and accounts" and "Support requests and ratings", and below under "The waitlist".
Children
Lighter Journeys is not for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. Recordings must not include personal information about children, as our terms say.
The waitlist
If you join the waitlist we keep your email address and anything else you chose to tell us (name, company, role, what you would like to measure, and where you heard about Lighter Journeys), only to invite you and send occasional product news. We never sell it. To be removed, contact chris@lighterjourneys.com; we delete the entry.
Recording other people
Only upload recordings you have the right to share. If a recording shows or narrates other people, or contains personal or confidential information, make sure you have their consent and that your organization allows it. Workspaces can use our participant notice template, in Help, to tell the people they record what happens to their recording.
Changes to this page
When the words on this page change, we update the date at the top. Before a change that reduces your rights or changes how we use data, we tell workspace admins, as the training section above already promises.
